Measuring Fireplaces for Gas Logs
Measuring for Gas Logs
Burning gas logs is more environmentally friendly, and more and more families are deciding to burn gas logs, instead of burning wood in their fireplaces. Many different sizes and shapes of gas logs are available, from a variety of different stores.
At Patio Grill and Fireplace, Inc. we sell R.H. Peterson gas logs, exclusively. From our experience, they are the most realistic looking logs, that put out a great deal of heat, even though they are fully vented gas logs.
In measuring your fireplace, first determine if your fireplace is masonry or prefabricated. A masonry fireplace is more likely to be found in homes built in the 1980’s and earlier – and is made with brick and mortar, where a prefabricated fireplace is manufactured, and then inserted into the home and finished around. Its made from metal, and has refractory panels made of concrete on the insides and floor.

Measure the very front opening width. On prefabricated fireplaces like those made by Majestic, Heatilator, or Martin among others, you can sometimes find the model number and that will give you the opening with (i.e. a BR36 has a 36” opening).
Follow the table below to determine what size gas logs your fireplaces need. If you have any questions, or are unsure, feel free to call us at 281.332.1480 or 1.800.684.6455.

Some people find that log sets bigger than 30” don’t look very realistic. Depending on the type of log, and the size of the fireplace, you can make your decision. Logs are available in sizes up to 60”.
